Khloé Kardashian spoke to People in this week’s cover story about her new life – just hours before Lamar Odom was found unconscious. Now Khloé opens up about her bedside vigil, her troubled marriage to Odom, and her commitment to his recovery. Plus – an exclusive excerpt from her revealing new book, “Strong Looks Better than Naked,” which hits stands on Nov. 3.
It should have been a fun day. On Oct. 13 Khloé playfully posed for photos for People and then spoke candidly about life, love, and her doomed marriage to Lamar.
But just hours later she learned the heartbreaking news that Odom, who turns 36 on Nov. 6, had been found unresponsive at a Nevada brothel. After flying to his bedside in Las Vegas – and taking control of all medical decisions while refusing to leave his side as he battles pneumonia and kidney damage – a decidedly more somber Kardashian spoke to People once again, this time in whispers as she sat in the room with Odom.
Here’s what Khloé had to share:
“There are too many other important things, too many medical things. It’s not even in our brains thinking about us as a couple or having a relationship right now. I loved him always, and I will always love him. I don’t believe love is fickle. I believe when you love someone, you are allowed to love from afar. You don’t have to be with that person in order to love him.”
“The fact that he woke up was definitely a sigh of relief for everybody. Every hour is different. It goes up and it goes down but he’s awake. He’s alive and that’s all I wanted, was for him to be okay.”
: “All I knew was I had to get there. I had to get to him and make sure he was okay. I hate that he was in that situation. I wouldn’t want anybody in that situation, especially someone I love and care about.”
« Rob is such a great guy, he’s charming, charismatic, everything. That’s what’s so infuriating. I’m like, ‘Where is your will to live life? Let’s be around people! I’ve been working on my patience, I’ve been really trying. But I have my moments and I do snap. I’ve offered to get a chef, I’m like, ‘What’s your excuse?’ But it’s not just that. I can’t win life for Rob. I have to wait until [he’s] ready to do it for himself.
My dad died when Rob was 16. Rob doesn’t have a father figure in his life. When [our stepdad] Bruce [now Caitlyn Jenner] was around, he was great, but he was going through his own things that none of us understood at the time. Lamar was [Rob’s father figure]. Once Lamar left – and it’s not Lamar’s fault at all – I think Rob didn’t know where to go. He was like, ‘I don’t have guidance anymore.’
It’s sad, because he’s only wasting his life more and more. But he has to figure it out for himself. And he has so many people who want to help him. »
« James has been very supportive and awesome. He’s been great with me. His season is starting, and I’m just allowing everything to unfold. If it’s ever too overwhelming [for him], then I understand that as well. »
